Timelapse video: removal of the BCM1F detector assembly
This summer, many components of the CMS detector at CERN were extracted after the shutdown of the LHC. This work is all part of the plan to upgrade the CMS detector over the coming years in preparation for the HL-LHC program. One of the components removed was an assembly belonging to the CMS Beam Radiation, Instrumentation, and Luminosity (BRIL) group. And this assembly contains the BCM1F detector which I helped manage for over 2 years!
While I wasn’t around to participate in this work, I wanted to share a neat video that some colleagues took and posted publicly this month. It shows a time-lapse of the work taking place inside the pulled-apart CMS detector.
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to work on a platform inside a 5-story cylindrical particle detector located 100m beneath the French countryside, take a look at these links!
